Bugs, bugs and more bugs!
In preparation for the upcoming camp, we have been developing and practicing field and lab protocols that campers will use. For example, we set up pan traps in different locations around Northwestern to see where different types of insects are found. We collected data about how many and what kinds of insects we found at a variety of different locations around campus. We analyzed our data, which led to more specific questions about the behavior of a variety of insects, including pollinators. The more we understand and the more questions we answer, the more we build an understanding of the natural world.
Some of our next questions require techniques other than pan traps. Back in the lab, we set up investigations to look at how insects respond to different environmental factors. We have also received support from our fellow scientists who provided us with the materials and information we need to continue our investigations. For example, we obtained a sample of fruit flies thanks to Jose at the Gallio Lab here at Northwestern. We will utilize these as a tool in our investigations.
